The Tar Heels of North Carolina are kings of the college basketball world. After losing to Villanova last year in the waning moments, North Carolina redeems itself to help head coach Roy Williams get his third National Championship. Despite their blue blood status, it is a story of perseverance that even the family raising three kids on a government cheese budget can relate to.
The hardwood is not the only place North Carolina won. The NCAA has reconsidered holding future events in the Tar Heel State after the state is starting to repeal the stuck-in-the-stone-age “bathroom bill”. Is the state that once criminalized consensual homosexual activity finally joining society in 2017? Yeah, but reluctantly. Like most things in this world, it comes down to money. Repealing the “bathroom bill” means that leagues will now reconsider holding events in the state again. More events means more revenue. NBA All-Star Weekend, which has been a massive money maker for cities like New Orleans and Toronto, was pulled from Charlotte because of the laws. The NCAA would not hold tournament games in the state. Being anti-gay (or anti anything nowadays) is bad for business. The LGBT community is under attack from every angle. Politicians have been pushing back on their rights, executive orders have been forcing the community back into the closet, violence against gays is on the rise and there is still plenty of workplace discrimination to go around. This war will never end, and LGBT supporters and enthusiasts know this, but they should relish this small victory.
